Late Spring at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve

It took me two years to get understanding when one season changes into another. You could tell me that there is no Mid Season in California, only mountains have their fall, but, common, really? Step out of the beach or from the city! Spring gets fewer objections. But still, because no one can say when Winter Bloom ends and starts Spring blossom. Everyone would agree on two things – Summer starts after Memorial day with golden grass over the hills; Winter begins after Memorial days with rain storms. And yes, it could vary +/- a week. But the idea will be the same. Grass or rain.

So there is still greenish weeds in the Santa Cruz mountains but only in the northern hills or under the shadow of big trees. I heard someone already swam in Lorenzo River in May but I still sleep under the warm blanket.
Lyrics away, let’s back to the hike.
We never hiked this part of the preserve. Nor I alone, nor together with Eugene. And the only reason is you cannot do a loop. So this time we walked Ridge trail to Mt Melville and then as soon as started to see private properties turned back. Ridge Trail gives you panoramic views and you will not want to miss them.

On the way back we turned on Hawk Ridge trail. Parts of the trail are covered with the shadow from the ridge so there were still wildflowers. And the last section is the uphill Charquin Trail to the Vista Point parking where is the best place to park the car for this hike and get THE BEST Valley view.

I think the best to start this hike 1-1.5 hours before the sunset. So the sun will be mild, shadows soft and you will see the night valley in the end of your walk.
